Affinity Publisher

Affinity Publisher is a professional page-layout application in the same class as Adobe InDesign — master pages, precise typographic control, full CMYK print production — and as of late 2025 it is completely free. When Canva acquired Serif (Affinity's maker), it unified Publisher, Photo, and Designer into a single free app and retired the paid license model entirely. For indie authors formatting cookbooks, children's picture books, comics, or any layout-heavy title, this is now the strongest value proposition in the pro-DTP tier.

Pricing#

• The Affinity app is free — $0, with no perpetual-license fee and no subscription. The previous one-time purchase price (~$70 per app / ~$165 suite) was removed when the free unified app launched (October 30, 2025).
• Optional Canva Pro AI add-ons — generative AI features (upscale, expand, retouch) are gated behind a separate Canva Pro subscription (~$144/year). These are not part of the core layout tool; you can produce a fully professional book without ever paying.
• The product now lives at affinity.studio (moved from the old affinity.serif.com).

Limitations#

• Learning curve: Still a professional DTP tool — closer to InDesign than to a one-click formatter; expect a real time investment
• Not a writing tool: You lay out finished, edited manuscripts; drafting happens elsewhere
• AI requires Canva Pro: The generative features are a paid Canva add-on, not free — the base app has no built-in AI
• iPad version lagging: The iPadOS release was still listed as "coming soon" through mid-2026; treat it as a desktop tool (Windows and Mac) for now

Alternatives#
