Kindle Create is Amazon's official free formatting tool for KDP. Download it for Windows or Mac, import your Word document, and export a publish-ready KPF file for direct upload to KDP — no design experience required. A single manuscript file handles both the Kindle ebook and the KDP paperback. Version 1.109 was released in February 2026, confirming active maintenance by Amazon.
Three Book Types
Kindle Create handles three distinct publishing formats:
- Reflowable ebooks — for novels, memoirs, and most non-fiction; text reflows to match the reader's device and font size preference
- Print replica / fixed-layout — maintains exact visual layout for textbooks, cookbooks, or illustrated books; visible only on Fire tablets and Kindle apps, not e-ink readers
- Comics and children's books — uses Guided View for panel-by-panel animation; supports image pop-ups and text pop-ups for interactive children's books
Ebook Formatting Features
- Automatic chapter detection — scans for Heading 1 styles in Word and creates chapter breaks and interactive TOC automatically
- Four professional themes — clean, KDP-optimized designs with customizable title, subtitle, author name, chapter styles, drop caps, and section separators
- Front and back matter templates — title page, copyright, dedication, foreword, prologue, epilogue, acknowledgments, author bio, character lists
- Built-in previewer — review your book in tablet, phone, and e-reader views with adjustable font size and face before uploading
Print and Paperback
The same DOCX file that produces your Kindle ebook also generates the KDP paperback upload. Kindle Create auto-calculates margins to KDP specification, adds roman numeral front matter pagination, optimizes for widow and orphan lines, and ensures the first chapter starts on a right-facing page. All KDP-supported trim sizes are available.
Pricing: Free. No subscription, no per-book fees. Version 1.109 as of February 2026.
Who It's For
- Amazon-exclusive authors — if you publish only to KDP and have no plans to distribute to Apple Books, Kobo, or other retailers, Kindle Create covers the full ebook-and-print workflow at zero cost
- First-time self-publishers — the automated chapter detection, theme system, and TOC generation remove the most common formatting headaches for straightforward text books
- Children's book and comic authors — the Guided View system is built specifically for image-heavy Kindle formats and requires no design expertise
Limitations
The most important limitation is distribution lock-in:
- Amazon-only output — KPF files work exclusively with KDP. Going wide to Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, IngramSpark, or any other retailer requires a different tool entirely (Reedsy Studio and Draft2Digital are free alternatives that produce distributable EPUB and PDF files)
- No tables, footnotes, or endnotes — these must be fully resolved in Word before import; Kindle Create cannot edit them
- Print formatting is fixed — fonts and margins are auto-set to KDP specifications; no customization is possible
- Only four themes — limited compared to Atticus (17+) or Vellum (30+)
- Subheading capitalization bug — the tool sometimes applies incorrect capitalization to subheadings and reverts manual corrections; a known issue as of 2025
- Large KPF file sizes — KPF files are larger than hand-coded EPUBs; for image-heavy books, this increases Amazon's delivery fees for KDP Select titles
- Fixed-layout editing trap — for comics and children's books, no text or layout can be edited after import; all changes require returning to source software, re-exporting, and re-importing
EPUB note: EPUB export is still available for reflowable books (not fixed-layout or print replica), confirmed as of mid-2025. MOBI format has been deprecated — KDP stopped accepting MOBI uploads in March 2025.
Alternatives
For authors who want wide distribution at zero cost, Reedsy Studio (free, web-based) or Draft2Digital (free, web-based) produce EPUB and print-ready PDF files accepted by all major retailers.
