Scribus

Scribus is a mature, open-source desktop publishing application that delivers genuine print-production features — CMYK color, spot colors, ICC color management, and PDF/X export — with no cost and no license restrictions. For authors laying out illustrated books, poetry collections, or complex nonfiction who don't want a subscription and are willing to climb a steeper learning curve, Scribus is the long-standing free-software answer to InDesign. The current stable release is 1.6.x (1.6.6, April 2026).

• Completely free and open-source — $0, no tiers, no subscription, no per-project fee. Released under the GNU GPL.
• Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux — one of the few pro-DTP tools with first-class Linux support, alongside no native cost barrier.

Limitations#

• Steep learning curve: Widely considered harder to learn than Affinity Publisher, with a less polished, more dated interface
• No native word processor: Import finished, edited text; Scribus is layout-only
• Community-driven support: Documentation and help come from wikis, forums, and volunteers rather than a commercial support desk
• Weaker EPUB story: Scribus is print-first; it does not export polished reflowable or fixed-layout EPUB the way InDesign or Affinity do — pair it with a dedicated ebook tool if you also need digital

Alternatives#

• Affinity Publisher (free) — the other zero-cost pro option, with a far more modern and approachable interface; usually the better first choice unless you specifically need Scribus's Linux support or open-source licensing
